Scouring Charm (Saponifying)

Scouring Charm (Vanishing)

Incantation: Scourgify.

Effect: Vanishes dirt and grime.

Other information: Distinct from the (Saponifying) Scouring Charm.

Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration.

Sealant Charm

Incantation: Unknown.

Effect: Seals the target after it has been closed shut.

Source(s): Canon.

Secret Message Charm

Incantation: Abeo Scripto.

Effect: Conceals writings and other markings from view.

Variability: The caster may include a code phrase or other mechanism for revealing the hidden message, and another for concealing it again.

Source(s): Witchcraft & Wizardry.

Seize-and-Pull Charm

Incantation: Carpe Retractum. Light: Orange or purple.

Effect: Projects, from the end of the caster's wand, a cord of light that can wrap around objects and then be retracted at will.

Source(s): Canon.

Serpensortia

See Snake-conjuring Charm.

Severing Charm

Incantation: Diffindo. Light: Light green, pink, or red.

Effect: Inflicts a precise, accurate cut upon the target.

Variability: Precision can influence the location and depth of the cut. Works best on soft materials like fabric or leaves, but potentially flesh as well, and proficient casting can sever wood or bone, or even stone and metal.

Other information: Earlier cutting spells had a tendency to burn or shred the target material.

Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration from Hogwarts is Here, Witchcraft & Wizardry, and myself.

Sharpening Charm

Incantation: Inspico.

Effect: Sharpens the target.

Miscasting: It is possible to cut oneself by miscasting this spell.

Source(s): Hogwarts is Here

Shield Charm

Incantation: Protego. Light: Invisible.

Effect: Deflects spells and blocks physical forces.

Variability: Possibly, the strength and utility of the charm depends on one's understanding of magic. It is certainly possible to produce inferior shields, as when Harry's Shield Charms were broken by Hermione's "well-placed Jelly-Legs Jinx" (GOF).

Other information: Not impenetrable. Shield Charms are tangible to some extent: there are several cases of a person being knocked down by a Shield Charm and (in the film) Umbridge was able to block arrows with the Shield Charm. Fairly complex, since many British Ministry employees can't manage it, but Harry and a bunch of other students could manage it, so this certainly isn't insurmountable. Its pendants are post-fixed; unique pendants include Mente Malitiae, which guards against jinxes and most hexes but is permeable to other spells, and Visus, which makes the user harder to concentrate upon but requires complicated wandwork

Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration.

Shield-Breaking Charm

Incantation: Frascia.

Effect: Ruptures protective magic, like the Shield Charm.

Other information: Limited utility beyond breaking protective charms, but the charm's specialized nature means that it can destroy or pierce many charms that the caster might otherwise find unassailable. Because it is intended to break through protective charms, it is sometimes categorized as a jinx or hex.

Source(s): Original.

Shock Spell

Incantation: Curamens.

Effect: Inflicts a controlled electrical discharge upon the target.

Source(s): Witchcraft & Wizardry

Shrinking Charm

Incantation: Reducio.

Effect: Shrinks the target.

Variability: Competent wixes are usually able to safely shrink an object to one-half or one-quarter of its size. For greater shrinkage, most wixes prefer Shrinking Solution, whose potency can be modulated and guaranteed.

Source(s): Hogwarts is Here and Witchcraft & Wizardry

Sieving Charm

Incantation: Unknown.

Effect: The target mixture sifts and separates itself into separate piles or pools.

Source(s): Original.

Signaling Spell

See Spark-spitting Charm.

Silano

See Fountain Charm.

Silencing Charm

Incantation: Silencio. Light: None.

Effect: Renders the target mute.

Variability: With precision, the spell may make the target totally incapable of making sound by other means.

Other information: More difficult to perform on ravens than on frogs. It is not always wise to use the Silencing Charm in a duel, because, if your opponent is capable of nonverbal magic, they will no longer broadcast their intent, and this may make up for the difficulty of casting nonverbally.

Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration. Additional observations from Blood Crest, by Cauchy (ch. link).

Silencing Charm (Russian)

Incantation: Kaput Molchanus, from Russian капу́т (kapút), "ruin, destruction, end," and молча́ть (molčátʹ), "to keep silent."

Effect: Renders the target mute.

Other information: Though it is described, and taught, as a Silencing Charm, this spell works by numbing and even paralyzing the vocal cords and other body parts essential to speech. Just as a skilled wix can use the classical Silencing Charm to prevent other kinds of sounds than speech, the skilled practitioner can numb or paralyze other parts of the throat and mouth. Because it is possible to suffocate the target by means of this spell, it is sometimes considered a hex.

Source(s): Tanya Grotter, with significant elaboration.

Silencio

See Silencing Charm.

Slug-Vomiting Charm

Softening Charm

Incantation: Spongify. Light: Purple.

Variability: It is very simple to change the color of the sparks.

Source(s): Canon, with elaboration from Hogwarts is Here and Witchcraft & Wizardry

Effect: Conjures wood rods and bandages, which form a splint around the target body part.

Variability: Proficient casting can also soothe the pain of the break.

Source(s): Witchcraft & Wizardry

Sponge Knees Curse

Incantation: Unknown.

Incantation: Vanishes certain of the target’s leg bones, making it difficult (but not impossible) for them to walk.

Source(s): Canon.

Spongify

See Softening Charm.

Somnambulist Charm

A.K.A. Puppet-body Charm.

Incantation: Mobilicorpus. Wand movement: Flick. Light: None.

Effect: Suspends the target body in the air and moves it (somewhat jerkily) as though controlled by puppet strings.

Other information: If the target is conscious, they will feel a sensation somewhat like strings pulling at their limbs. Even mild physical resistance can break this enchantment, so it is not useful for incapacitation. Often employed by Healers in the course of their day-to-day work.

Source(s): Canon, with elaboration from Hogwarts is Here and Witchcraft & Wizardry.

Stealth Sensoring Spell

Incantation: Detergo.

Effect: Enchants a doorway or other portal, so that those who pass through while disguised by magic will trigger an alert.

Source(s): Canon, with elaboration from Witchcraft & Wizardry

Stinging Jinx

Incantation: Unknown. Light: White.

Effect: Stings like a particularly nasty insect bite, causing the targeted body part to swell and redden painfully.

Variability: With some precision, it is possible to make the site of the swelling turn a different color, like blue or yellow.

Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration from Hogwarts is Here, Witchcraft & Wizardry, and myself.

Stitching Charm

Incantation: Suturis.

Effect: Magically stitches together two objects in a permanent fashion by interweaving them.

Source(s): Canon.

Stunning Charm

Incantation: Stupefy. Wand movement: Vertical downward slash. Light: Red.

Effect: Renders the target unconscious.

Variability: With precision, it can halt moving objects.

Other information: Multiple Stunners can cause serious injury or even kill.

Source(s): Canon.

Stupefy

See Stunning Charm.

Summoning Charm

Incantation: Accio. Light: None.

Effect: Summons the target object, which may be specified by name.

Miscasting: The object will generally navigate around corners but imprecise casting can negatively affect this. The object may be damaged if two people summon it at the same time.

Other information: Requires thought, and the object must be clear in the caster's mind. Objects which are further away are harder to summon, but in theory there is no hard maximum range. Cannot be used on buildings or living things (except indirectly). Curiously, flobberworms are an exception, and it can also be used on objects being worn or held. There are counter-spells to prevent an object from being Summoned. Most magical goods sold in contemporary times are pre-enchanted with Anti-Theft Charms to prevent them from being Summoned by anyone but their rightful owners.

Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration from Hogwarts is Here.

Sunbeam Spell

Incantation: Solemos.

Effect: The caster's wand emits a focused beam of pure sunlight, warm to the touch.

Variability: Precision will affect the degree to which the light is "true" sunlight (it is possible, for example, for the light to be sufficient to bother a Devil's Snare but not a vampire).

Source(s): Canon, with elaboration and a new incantation to distinguish it from the Wand-lighting Charm.

Supersensory Charm

Incantation: Sensus Supremus.

Effect: The target's normal senses become supernaturally acute and perform well beyond their normal scope.

Source(s): Canon, with some elaboration from Witchcraft & Wizardry

Sweeping Charm

Incantation: Purgo Tabulato.

Effect: Animates a broom or mop, which cleans the floor of an indicated room or other area under its own power.

Other information: Unless provided dustpans, bins, or an aperture through which to sweep, brooms will create piles of dust and debris. Mops may require a source of water. The spell is trickier than it may first appear.

Source(s): Witchcraft & Wizardry

Switching Spell

Incantation: Unknown. Light: White.

Effect: Transfigures two target objects so that they now each have the original position of the other, as though they had swapped places.
